Insulation is the material which is extruded over the conductor. Once the insulation is applied to the conductor it is called the primary wire. The insulation is applied to the conductor with an extruder which melts the insulation, pushes it through a barrel, and into a tip and die through which the conductor passess.

Overmolding
C&M performs overmolding operations to shock proof, water proof, dust proof and ruggedize electronic assemblies and electrical interconnects. Overmolding is also utilized to contour and streamline assemblies and interconnects to meet mechanical design requirements and styling. C&M employs the following processes in molding techniques:
- Hot melt technology (low pressure injection molding)
- Thermoplastic molding
- Insert injection molding
- Liquid silicone rubber molding
